ALLEVIATING COASTAL FLOODING IN EASTBOURNE
The Challenge
Eastbourne Borough Council was faced with solving the problem
of repeated flooding of an area of coastal plain; the council
knew that a series of balancing lakes would be needed, also
creating recreational facilities and wildlife habitats, but
where should the lakes be located?
Our Solution
Detailed aerial survey data was input into the MOSS software
package and used to create a very accurate three-dimensional
model of the area for the design team. Eighteen lakes were
then modeled, using the software to ensure that the banks were
the appropriate height. This geographic information then formed
the input to detailed hydraulic models determining flood prevention
effectiveness. A further benefit was the production of perspectives
for public consultation.
