FLOOD DEFENCES
Black & Veatch is one of the UK's leading providers of flood and coastal defence
appraisal and design. Working closely with the Environment Agency of England and
Wales in particular, we assess, design and deliver sustainable flood and coastal
defence schemes.
Strategic Analysis
We have an established track record of undertaking high level strategic management
planning for flood and coastal defence and river basin management. We consider the
full range of issues, including geomorphology, habitats, land uses and flood defences.
The effects of long term natural changes are evaluated and monitored in relation
to river and coastal environments. We routinely establish and predict the impacts
associated with changing water levels and flood events. This involves multi-disciplinary
studies to address concerns regarding hydrology, drainage, siltation and the wider
environment.
Scheme Justification
As well as high level strategic studies, we appraise and deliver flood and coastal
defence schemes to protect people and property, and also habitat and the wider environment.
With sea level rise and increased storminess predicted for the UK and many other
parts of the world, there is the need for informed investment decisions, both in
terms of new and existing flood protection. Scheme justification involves identifying
the most appropriate solution to a problem, in terms of technical viability, economic
justification, environmental impacts and long-term sustainability. In doing so,
we consider both hard and soft engineering solutions, including the engineering
of habitats.
Project Delivery
Black & Veatch undertake the delivery of schemes, from design through to construction
supervision and contract administration. Innovative solutions to problems are developed
for both large and small scale projects. We work under a variety of contracts, offering
best practice and best value. Risk management is key to our approach throughout
the life of our projects.
